Time to repower

Post by fishmaster176 »

Today, I visited our friends at VT Home and Marine and by the time I left, I had helped the economy by investing in a new 115 Merc. 4 stroke. This replaces a 2001 2 stroke Merc. 90 and a 2012 8 hp 4 stroke Merc. They are both excellent engines, but I didn't care for the kicker thing, so it'll be 1 engine doing everything. I hope it's worth it. It should push my Fishmaster 176 along at a decent pace and troll when we wish.
Both of the old engines are great runners and will be sold through VT Home and Marine.
Can't wait to get the new setup out on the water.
I'm also investing in the fuel/water filter system, new fuel lines and the electronic tach. Hoping for many years of troublefree fishing. The best part is that my wife is my fishing partner and she's all for it.
Life is good.

You won't be disappointed, that setup is a thing of beauty and I'm sure you'll love it.

Yes, that's the electronic tach. It does some pretty fancy RPM adjustments. It's the one that was demo'ed at the seminar. It's like $500, but worth every cent, so I'm told.
I'm thinking this may be the last boat I own, so I want it right.
Oh yeah, the wife is thrilled because she used to run the kicker.

You made a great move Fred.
You will love the electronic tach control. I just finished installing mine, can't wait to go try it.

See you soon on the pond.

I am sure you will all find that setup stellar. I had always fished with the old main engine and a trolling motor until I started fishing wih Ron. That motor with the troll control is an amazing thing. You can dial your speed in a simple easy touch of a button. Excellent readouts for keeping track of motor data too. That motor would troll all day and purr like a kitten. Quite too.

Barry, the Tach and Speed gauges work on any Mercury engine that is SmartCraft enabled.
It goes from four stroke 40 HP up to verado 300 HP and 2 stroke Optimax from 75 to 250 HP.
It also works on MerCruiser
If you engine has the Smartcraft logo, then it is compatible.

Some features available on the gauge might require optional sensors, and not all features work on all models.
Check this site for more info and compatibility charts.

I installed the tach gauge on my Optimax 115 HP 2005 last week.

Picked up the boat yesterday, with the new 115 Merc. on the back. Weather permitting, I'll get out tomorrow. Then I'll know what I'll need to make it troll, be it bags or a plate or nothing. The switch wasn't cheap, but the rewards will be great. The Smart Tach will also take some getting used to. Christmas in May. Gotta love it!!!!

Good luck out there. I was going to swing by your place tomorrow and give you the $$ for your old controll king, but sounds like you'll be off having fun instead. I'll stop by soon.

Merry Christmas

Finally was able to enjoy some time on the lake. Spent Weds. morning breaking in the new 115 and I haven't stopped smiling. It will troll at 2.2 at 700 rpms, so I don't see a need for additional braking. The Smart Tach will take some getting used to, but it certainly gives a whole new meaning to precise trolling speeds.
Just ordered a Minn Kota alternator charger for my trolling battery that allows the main motor to charge it. Has anyone had any experience with this setup? I hate forgetting to charge my troller until the day I want to use it. Yes, I do have senior moments. :)

Glad to read you were able to get out in your economic stimulus package!

Great to hear the shakedown went well and all systems are GO!
