Any luck with jigging for Alewife to use for bait?

When we go out striper fishing typically we jig for mackerel and load up the live well and drift fish or troll with the live bait and have been very successful and was wondering if anyone has done it with alewife and silvers when silvers aren’t biting?

I tried this for a wile last week in IS using #8 sibiki rigs with a weight and as we trolled over the bait we just dropped it down jigged it a little when we thought it was near it then reeled it in being careful not to impact the lines that were out.

My thinking was you’ll be catching the very same source of food in the area might do the trick?

The #8 jig hooks might have been little to big from the veriety pack I got had #1 thru #14 … 1 are larger through #8 got smaller then started getting bigger again 9 thru 14 strange.

Has anyone tried anything like this?

Thanks
Chuck

Please remember that VT has restrictive regulations on gear and bait. Regarding sabiki rigs, note that:

Each line may not have more than two baited hooks or three artificial flies or two lures with or without bait.

Further:

On Lake Champlain, alewife and white perch may be taken only by open-water/ice fishing and used as bait in Lake Champlain; Alewife may only be used/possessed if dead.

If you are interested in fishing live bait for salmonids, ice fishing is your best bet. Learn how to catch smelt, get a set of good traps, grab an auger, and go.

Thanks for the feedback!
We’re heading up to LC for a couple weeks has anything improved in IS on the silver front? Also last year spring early summer we were catching lakers just south of Isle La Motte but this year no luck is anyone getting them up in that area?
Thanks and good luck
