Apple report. Falling like crazy... early... apple yield sparse due to late frost in May. I wouldnt count on hunting apple trees in Oct. Fruits may be long gone by then.

Acorns.... hmmmmm.... ehhhhh... so so from my observations. Lots of oaks drought stressed. Heard beeches may yield alot again.

Any observations/comments from anyone else on fall food sources?????

I've always preferred candied apples or kettle corn at the fairs. :D

I did not see much of a mast crop where I hunt yesterday. I did pick a bunch of nice black berries though!

Saw a black bear standing up and eating elderberrys this week. There is about a 95% reduction in apples in my area this year. Last year was a banner apple year. The berrys are the best they have ever been and October will find them eating the left over bramble leaves in my area. Pretty sad about the apples. We have no oak trees in my area but next year I'm planning on planting dozens if not more on my land.

My food plot looks great so I expect some trails into it this fall and might try a run 1/4 mile away, but a lot could change before then.

I'd look for ferns in the woods that the early frosts won't get and new seeding clover in agriculture area's.

Lots of bears in the corn early. I think they know that the mast is going to suck this fall.

Little apples, no acorns and little beeches my way... Looks like it may be an interesting Bow season... Corn fields get boring.

Make sure you dig oaks from mountainous cold area with nature oaks all around as oaks can tend to be really different hardiness from area to area in northern Vermont. Most oaks from the southern part of the state or NH don't make it a lot of the time. Nursery oaks are often not hardy either. Hardy oaks survive well in warmer zones but not vice-versa.
