Boat wiring... Tool question.

Post by JK47 »

I wanted to know if any members here use a ratchet type crimping tool for 6 gauge wire.

If so, would you mind telling me where you purchased you crimper and what model.

I've purchased supplies to rewire my trolling motor using marine grade lugs and 6 gauge wire. I am also adding a minn kota 60 amp breaker vs. the cheap one that came stock with the boat.

I have been doing some reading and understand I should avoid solder. Looks like the only thing I am missing is the crimp tool for 6 ga. And they don't appear to be cheap. So if you have been in my shoes and found a reliable tool for a reasonable price please let me know!

Thanks
Jason

If your crimp is a solid barrel you could use an electricians crimper that produces a single indent on each stroke. Standard size adjust from #8 copper to 250mcm and usualy available at an electrical supply house as a loaner tool.

Take a look here:

http://www.wiringproducts.com/contents/en-us/d39.html

and:
For ratchet crimpers, there is a common and popular unit distributed by Ancor that is about $80. Or you can buy the same unit from Del City Wire without the Ancor name on it for $28.

Ratchet double crimper for terminals with insulators:

Ratchet crimper for bare barrel terminals:
http://www.delcity.net/delcity/servl...=714008&page=1

Compare to the ratchet double crimper on the bottom of this page:

Not expensive & very good:

I think you're are OK with that?

Okay...

So I struck out!

Went to every local store I could find and nobody had anything larger than 8 gauge!

Even Yankee electric supply didn't have it.

Any suggestions?

The ones linked are great but again only went to 8 or 10 gauge, not 6

Try an internet search for a battery shop or check with parts america, autozone or even a napa as they may have a tool.
