“Vermont Fish Chowder Champion” to be Crowned on Vermont PBS
Live cook-off celebrates fresh fish from clean Vermont waters.

In its latest live cooking special, Vermont PBS celebrates the fresh local fishery that is Lake Champlain and crowns Vermont’s first Fish Chowder Champion!

“The Vermont Fish Chowder Championship: An Outdoor Journal Special” airs live Thursday, May 21st at 7:30 p.m. It will also be streaming live at vermontpbs.org. The championship round features six finalists chosen from earlier elimination rounds. It’s the first in what is planned to be an annual chowder competition, sponsored by the Vermont Fresh Network, Hotel Vermont and Lake Champlain International.

Chowder finalists are:
Dean Dennis, Essex Junction, Vt. Matt Pearsall, Fayston, Vt.
Amber Machia, Highgate, Vt. Karyl Kent, Huntington, Vt.
Joe Bartlett, Colchester, Vt. Levi Keszey, Underhill, Vt.

Fresh local fish like salmon, walleye, perch and other species are growing in popularity as delicious table fare for fish lovers around the region. This year’s finalists will be vying for the title of
“Fish Chowder Champion,” in a program that also offers tips on making your own chowder at home. The live program will also talk about the importance of clean waterways and the great fishing opportunities that exist on Lake Champlain and elsewhere in Vermont.

Chowder recipes, gift boxes with local specialty food products and some great fishing gear will be offered during the program. As a special feature, there’ll also be an on-line auction for a guided fishing trip on Lake Champlain and gift certificates from local restaurants. The auction begins during the live broadcast and will continue for 10 days on vermontpbs.org.

Judges for the competition include Gina Bullard, co-host of Outdoor Journal on Vermont PBS and The :30 on WCAX-TV; Louis Porter, Commissioner of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department; food writer and localvore Candy Page; passionate Vermont angler Randy Colomb; and Miss Vermont winners Lucy Edwards and Alayna Westcom.

Vermont PBS is Vermont’s statewide public media provider, committed to fostering lifelong learning and an appreciation for Vermont’s working landscape and outdoor opportunities. More information about Vermont PBS is available at vermontpbs.org.

After the spillage in Dean's truck at DYP, I feared he might be turned off on Chowder. Good luck!
And to our own "passionate" judge Mr. Colomb, hanging with a couple of Miss Vermont winners can't be a bad way to spend the day!!

It was a fine nite for tasting chowder.

Cook they did, with the finest of ingredients fit for a King.
Such tastes, smells and looks presented that they bring.

An "A" Game it was. They said there was one winner Cause....

I say WE All "WIN" including the Fishes and to the Presenters "THANKS AND BEST WISHES"

Boy, all the chowders were something to behold and taste and smell with the most locally produced and wild ingredients incorporated that I can recall. It was great fun to see a studio set and nice to meet the fellow panelist and people at VPT.

The important Vermont Fresh Network and their promoting the "Vermont Local" brand deserves our support and enjoyment around us. The expanded work now being done by LCI is most refreshing and delivers hope for the resource that we love.

Despite the promotion of me as being a "PASSIONATE" Vermont Angler both Miss Vermont's behaved with Professional restraint that we all expect of their Titles :D

My wife Kathy says some things are to be kept at home. :?
