Lucas’s 1st salmon

Post by Reelax »

;)

Had a chance to take son in law Tom and 7 year old grandson to the southern inland sea for some trolling Saturday. Late start got us a chance to view a great salmon that meangreen had landed earlier and he gave us all the intel we need to get Lucas right into the fish:)

We setup outside the fleet and trolled in as we setup and got settled in for a sunny mid morning troll…

1st salmon came on a slide diver down 30 back 50 with a silver and black crazy Ivan on it.

Lucas jumped right on the rod and fought the fish like a pro. After 2 nice jumps and a nice fight the salmon was slid into the net for a happy kid to celebrate.

This got his interest and sprits peaked. We trolled by Chawk who snuck under the bridge to find silver in the sea. He had a whole crew on deck and had struck silver alder already. This gave Lucas a chance to talk to someone in the radio and make him really feel like a salmon troller swapping results with a boat off out bow.

Hot dogs, chips and Candy were the menu today. As you can imagine, Lucas had a say in that:)

Since he called the shots all day we ended up beaching for a swim due to the hot weather. While I would say this is not an option I would entertain in a normal trolling trip. It turned out to be a great idea!

looking forward to the next adventure with Lucas on Reelax. He seemed to really show some passion after the 1st salmon jumped multiple times on him. maybe he is hooked. Time will tell:)

Fish on!

Nice! Trolled from 7am -1pm today and caught 1 Laker in outer bay. It was 10lbs which is pretty darn big for there. 1 more hit that we missed and then nada. We saw TONS of fish, scattered all over the place off the cut to sunset in 60-90 FOW. Could not get one to bite. I was even running that same silver crazy Ivan lure. As well as many others.

Congrats on getting your new crew member hooked on salmon! I was out there early Saturday and it was encouraging to see so much bait in the Inland Sea. There was one bait ball so thick that it even had the lines dancing as I trolled through.

Tom and Lucas - Welcome to the Fleet. Reelax clearly set you on a good entry point! Lucas looks like he manages the wheel better than I do, and because of him, I'm going to start adding a swimsuit to my boat bag when I crew with Matt! There is NOTHING wrong with hot dogs, chips and candy! Well done! And Lucas, I'm sorry that I missed you on the radio, but well done!!!

Great Fish, and well done!! I hope to share future deck time with you so we can catch many more!

Hey Joe there was a termocline! Top was 62-64 and 55 deg was between 30-45 down depending on where you were… Not a bad start. Hope the wind subsides for a while so we can get a solid temp profile for a good June bite.
