VT Fish & Game Report-Cup half Empty

Post by Speedy »

Here is the Fish & Game official reply to my question.

Bob,
Thank you for checking with us.
Your Vermont fishing license is only valid in the Vermont portion of Lake Memphremagog.

Are you surprised by this response? Maybe I'm missing something?

Yes..missing something. I asked the basic question, "Being new to Lake Memphremagog, may I fish in all of the lake's water and NOT touch Canadian soil".. Answer NO. Comparing to New York and Conn. agreements with shared waters. I wonder if there is a Red Line in the sand/floating warning signs, government patrol boats. Holy Cow, I just want to have fun and relax fishing, catch and release fish. They can keep their waters. Not interested in problems.

Speedy, It would be great to have reciprocal licenses for all of our VT waters, but with a limited exception for Champlain, we don't. It's incumbent on us to mindful of regulations. As a saltwater angler across many states too, too, I recognize that many legal grounds and restrictions might require GPS accuracy, Follow the rules, and then have fun and relax fishing, catch and release fish without problems.

I consider Memphremagog my "home" lake. I wish it was easier to fish the whole lake too, but I've found my peace. I get to fish cold-water until sometime in June(and again starting in September) when they go north of the border and then switch to Pike, Walleye and Bass or just travel to Willoughby or Champlain for cold-water. At the beginning of the season, our tactics are slightly behind what the guys here will be posting about using(amazing how much of the same tactics/lures work though) and by closer to June, we're using tactics in water that's warmer/earlier than what the guys here are posting about.

As far as the importance of knowing where you are on the lake, aside from obviously being an important thing that's needed to avoid a few different just barely submerged rocks, you need to know where the border is. Same thing holds true for the Missisquoi Bay on Champlain. On Memphremagog, this is clearly marked with floating buoys. Just keep an eye out for them like you would for anything, or anyone else, on the water.

If you plan to buy a license and fish up there, be aware that it is only ONE rod per person. Since I often only have 1-3 folks in the boat and licenses are more expensive for non-residents, I don't bother to fish it. Trolling with one rod just doesn't do it for me. If you are just motoring around, as long as you don't touch land, or drop an anchor(because that touches land under the water, and yes, I just checked with CAN Boarder Patrol about that), you don't need to call into Canadian Customs to do that. If you touch land, anchor, or stay on your boat overnight(I think), you need to have called into CAN customs and gotten your number. If you get a Nexxus card, coming back into the US is a breeze.

Hope this helps. See you on the water.
