Nautical January salmon run
Posted: Sun Jan 08, 2023 8:10 am
We launched at Arnold’s bay with no interested boats around at 1st light Saturday. Wind was north 10 or so. We motored across to NY, tuned south and setup. Waves were 1-2 feet at start. As we trolled south and picked away at fish. The wind picked up and we started to see 3’ waves and more:)
With such a slow bite to start with only 6 fish by 9am we decided to spark the grill and cook some Teal duck, shallot, and bbq and raspberry marinade hot pockets that Joe brought. Man they were tasty and sweet. We followed that with some panko coconut shrimp. This bbq run got the bite going and we landed 3 salmon in a row right in from of cole bay in a flutter of action.
We had to have one person on the wheel at all times going north as the wind was stiff gusting. Saw a couple other boats out also battling the blow. Good day to have a
3 man crew cause while fighting fish all had jobs to do.
We trolled down below beaver creek but only found lakers down there. Even in Todd’s Majic trench:)
After a little searching we returned to the Salmon spot and found more. Nothing over 20” today but the lakers and salmon sure do fight with 40.5 deg water:)
We ended at 230 after having a ball. The grill required a wet towel to stay lite in some angles today which is the 1st time we ever had that issue!
Best 2 spoons today were a custom taped chartuse and silver spoon and an orange and copper flashing. They look the majority of the salmon.
Worked had to get counter to 21 after 7.5 hrs and 23 miles on the lake:) Every bit of it a blast!
Thanks guys for hanging in on such a nautical day for soooo long.
