Local Lake Trip 10/30

Post by keithm87 »

We wrapped up our year on the ocean last weekend, and with that we got the Polar Kraft fired back up. My plan was to hit Champlain for a shakedown (haven’t been out on the lakes since May) but chores and a nasty cold kept me local. We hit a small pond in central VT that we fish regularly and is known for producing no fish.

We arrived at 11:30 to clear skies and no wind. The PK fired right up after it’s slumber. Set 4 rods with 2 riggers a dipsy and a lead core. Within 20 minutes I see the rigger rod bouncing. It didn’t release so I assumed a small laker, but was surprised with a chunky 17 inch rainbow. We released it and strangest thing happened it swam 6 inches from the transom for the next like 5 minutes.

Another pass in the area produced another similar rainbow. Tossed it in the livewell for supper. Another pass and again another bow.

After that we had another bite, and a miss. It died down for about an hour before we had our deep rod at 40ft over 80 go off and dig down hard.

Going into this trip I was concerned that there wouldn’t be a huge amount of thrill left in lake fishing after the summer that included yellowfin tuna, bluefin tuna, mako sharks, and thresher sharks. But that rod bent over and I grabbed it and the thrill was there. Immediately thought it was a nice fish. A couple minutes later we confirmed it was a solid inland laker at 9.5lb and just shy of 30 inches.

Another pass in that area produced another nice one at around 8lb.

The 4.5 hour sunny calm afternoon trip turned out to be the most productive trip I’ve ever had at this lake (and I’ve fished it a LOT)

A successful shake down trip has us ready to hit Champlain Saturday for the frostbite! Looking forward to seeing everyone!
