Ocean City 2022

Post by Gecha (Gerry) »

Finally. after more than 2 years waiting, the border opened and we were able to move to Ocean City, MD for the summer.
It took almost 2 weeks to get the condo back in living condition and the pontoon boat back on the water.
Wednesday was my first time on the salty water. It felt so good. Within 2 hours, I caught 4 flounders, 2 of them were nice keepers.

Today, back on the water with a neighbor, ended with 3 throwbacks, a skate, and multiple blue crabs but not enough for a meal.

If anyone interested, my Ocean Front condo is available week July 02-09 for a VERY good deal.
We also have week July 16-23 available.
PM me for more details.

Tried fishing on the 4th of July.... too many boats on the water, so it turned out more like a cruising trip across the bay.
I had the line in the water for less than 1/2 hour, no fish bite, but still got a creature out of the water. It was release after the pic.

I tried fishing yesterday afternoon for flounder, but the tide was too strong, I did not get any bites.
I switched to a more secluded area and had fun catching a bunch of spots, they are great bait fish for stripers and large flounders.
The spots were all on the large size, maybe too big for bait, they might end up in filets for my next lunch.

Unfortunately, all our spots are gone.
During the night, an otter managed to break open our fish pod and ate all our spots, about 30.
He did the same to our neighbor fishing pod. This has been happening for many years now.
It's time to get creative and build a better and stronger pod.

Tonight, was tuna on bbq.
Our neighbor got back fishing offshore and gave us some nice tuna steaks from the yellow fins they caught today.
Life does not get much better than this.

Friend invited me to go tuna fishing on his 26' twin engine sailfish.
We left at 5 am, returned 4 pm.
We went just over 20 miles offshore and trolled all day.
Beautiful day on the water, around 80 degrees and calm winds.
However, the fish did not want to play.
I ended catching the only fish about 1/2 hour before returning.
The nice king mackerel hit a long line and took 10 minutes to bring to boat.
We burned about 50 gallons @ $5.60 a piece, that's makes it for an expensive outing, but a lot less than the charters.

Went on the water today to cool off a bit for a short time. Weekends are not the best time. Too many boaters and weekenders, lots of traffic.
Tried fishing in a remote location, but bite was very slow. Got one small croaker and this old fishing rod.

Will try to clean it a bit and see what the reel looks like.

Thursday July 28 was a very hot day. I had to go on the water to cool off.
When it's too hot, fish don't bite so I decided to go clamming.
I had to wait a bit until tide was low enough and found a shallow area less than 2 feet deep where I could rake for clams.
In 2 hours, I found 43 clams only, I was expecting a lot more, but that's enough for a good meal.

Today I spent some time catching spots for bait. I caught many but most were too big for bait. I finally got a few that were the right size and used them to fish stripers. The striper bite was fun. I managed to get 3 to the boat and got broken a few times. They were all released to grow bigger.

Where you out in Mr Sea or in a different
Rig? Sounds like a fruitful day. Was that all in the bay?

Thanks for the report Gerry.

All fish besides the king mackerel were caught in the bay or in the jetty from our pontoon "Mr. Sea".
Unfortunately, our friends the Smith family (Lance, Janet, Tom) sold their house and the Longfin last year. They are no longer spending their summers in Ocean City.
