A day that it was supposed to rain... I went to the St-Lawrence river for sturgeon fishing with my friend Michel and my father in law. The largest fish my father-in-law has saw in his life is a 12 inches trout. I brang him with me to impress him.
At the begining, his reel was broken. While he was repairing it, a strike... We were two for the fight: me the reel and him the rod.
Great team work, but I left him the fish for the picture
After few hours, another sturgeon on my friend rod, a great 4min fight on video for this medium sized sturgeon:
Next month will be better for sturgeon
Sturgeon Montreal 9/3

This is on my long list of things to accomplish before death. Such cool, prehistoric fish. Do they reach a large size in the St Lawrence?

Wow...great team work indeed. That's not an easy task...one guy with the rod, the other guy with the reel!
That fish wasn't having a good day!!
What are the rules for fishing them? Is the population of them high enough that they can they be kept?

Catch and serve with lemon.

This is the specie that gives you the best fight. We could have kept one each, but we released the fishes in the water. They are too special.JK47 wrote:What is the fight like? Catch and release only right?
Some people are reporting catching 60lbs. Here is a video at the same spot, 45lb:MarknFish (Mark) wrote:This is on my long list of things to accomplish before death. Such cool, prehistoric fish. Do they reach a large size in the St Lawrence?
2 others prehistoric fishes in my wish list before to die: gar and bowfin

Ludo,
Thanks for the look. I had know ides that there was a fishable population in that river. Can you give us a few more details. I think that this is a new one fore most of us.

To fish lake sturgeon, I think it's similar to the carp, I think the best baits to use are the worms. We looked for place with mug on the bottom, with a current. We have caught sturgeon between 5 and 20 feet of water.
When we fished the night last year, the ratio: we caught like 3 channel catfishes for 1 surgeon.
We can fish the sturgeon between June 15th To October 31st 2011. The limit to keep is 1 sturgeon.
I never kept one, only catch & release. It's a good feeling to have a fish older than us in our hands. They can live more than 80 years.

Ludo, this is really great information.
Are these the same sturgeons that grow over 8 feet and 400 lbs?
I live only a few minutes from the St-Lawrence but never tried fishing for them.
Maybe we can get together and teach us some of your tricks.
Great post, pics, and videos.
