September salmon slam

Post by Reelax »

 had Tunamas and Steelie Joe on Reelax Sunday with plans to fish with Phantom Angler, and Cathy Jean as a 3 boat fleet. Rob had a rounded crew with Cowboy. Crawfish, and Lightandvariable aboard.
Wind was slight from south and surface temps were on mid 60’s. Difference today was the thermocline had moved way down to 70ish!

1st fish was a brown! 35 down on a golden bomb pop. Then a salmon. The bait was not as good as weeks before and the suspended weeds were an issue. Also the slide diver lines came in with copious amounts of fleas on them we had to use the water flic and wet rag method of clearing them as they were retrieved.
Many boat out trolling for Sept! Saw atleast 6 other boats in the Frey plying for action.

As we bbqed the baked stuffed clams Joe brought we landed a rare (for us) Whitefish.
That thing hit wayyyy back on an 8 color lead set.

We started talking about a September slam that would include a whitefish. All we really needed was a laker. Our counter was at 6 and we still had not seen a laker!!! We bbqed up a set of baby back pork ribs that came out perfect after a little over an hr on the grill.

This gave us the energy to move off this slow bite and prospect for something better. We headed north to the Boquet where we passed the rig laying double power cables down the middle of the lake. That thing is a little village on the water!

The Boquet held slimmer bait but it was high in the column in spots. We quickly got a couple more salmon and were wondering the damn laker we needed was.. lol

Finally Joe takes a rod and pulls in a juvenile laker and we all celebrate the September slam of 4 cold water species….. When the CathyJean sent us a pic of a steelhead they had landed we thought damn. One of those would make this a semtember super slam.

Seems the lack of rain has made this September the most salmon active one I remember. I’ve caught more salmon in one trip this September than many whole September’s in years past!

Good thing is the stock of year old lake fish look great and healthy. frostbite season should be a blast!!!!

Well we had another course to eat so the steak sliders went on the grill to ensure we didn’t need anything to fill us till well after we got home.

Thanks for a memorable day Joe and Scott. It was great to have a crew that runs the set like it’s their own!

Fish on!

What a day! First time I've done a brown and a whitefish on the same day! Who would have guessed that a 30 - 75 foot spread would produce a single laker this season only in the 11th hour. I know they are deep where the jiggers are getting them at 80 -100+. And that picture is the last time I saw the tongs? Hopefully you found them (though easily replaced, maybe with blue epoxy handles to meet the new Reelax color scheme!) Great way to see out September, it only gets better from here! One last thought... I forgot to look for Joe's stick bait around your motor mount. Maybe you found it, but double check your seal? Great day guys!
