Steelhead

Post by Themug »

Saw our boys hard at work today stocking 16,000 or so steelhead. Fun to watch and exciting to know that in another year or two some will be a catchable size!! It's a video, click on it if you care to see it.

That's great news. I'll like to catch a few of them in a few years.
In the meantime, this could be a buffet for walleyes and pikes

I don't think they're big enough to keep.

Wish they would do that with a couple loads of walley in all the rivers.

But if attrition isn't too high 2015 - 2016/17/18 could be good! :)

I am very glad they are stocking earlier. I had never seen a cormorant at salmon hole...until the hatchery truck showed up with a few thousand steelhead. Within 10 minutes there were about 30 cormorants above the dam feasting on the fish. I had a great day about a month later teaching a buddy how to fly cast in the falls above the bridge because every cast got nailed by an 8-10" steelie.

How many of us would do shifts shooting cormorants even if we bought our own ammo? All the USF&W would need to do is coordinate pickup of the floaters as they made their way downriver...and truck 'em over to the woodchip plant for their final disappearance. Now THAT would be a great idea and a new Vermont family tradition!

(why do we need grants when we have sportsmen?)
