2023 Rotary "Sleep Deprivation" series 1

Post by The River Rat »

There's alot of problems out there people can have, some good others not so much. 1 particular issue here on team Controlled Chaos is we like to fish, alot and multi species at that. Of those multi species the silver king and and green gold are held highest ranking on our extensive list of "problems" Starting off a week ago John ( Controlled Chaos himself!!!) came up to do some silver recon to find a bite and it panned out. High double digit count of silver with a couple 5's and a 7# hunch back to boot. High spirits for Derby day.

Our Team (Controlled Chaos/ River Rat) adventure started early Thursday morning after a sleepless night full of anticipation and excitement. John left Rindge NH prior to 9 am to pick me up and just after 11 we were headed North. Scouted out a new camp ground closer to our intended fishing grounds and with no shade and no working shower no beuno. On to our tried n true Shelburne site. With a record setting tent set and gear dump we were off to a local watering hole for something cold and a bite to eat then on to the lake to do some intended walleye scouting and enjoy the evening, let's stop rite there... intended was the key word. Low and behold we were so amped to be on the lake we couldn't help catch some bass and White's and the next thing ya know it's after dark and there is no turning back now  We settled in to a secluded bay and prepped gear counting the minutes go by until midnight! And it was on but low and behold we didn't get the bite we had dreamed up...all night. We cast, we trolled we cast and trolled more and with only 3 fish and a mystery monster that took a rather large lipped crankbait the opposite direction of the boat and straightened a 30# VMC crank clip  it was 4:30 am and time to think silver and meet the fleet on the salmon grounds. With a quick methodical stumble to the truck we hauled riggers to the boat and we were on our way south at a gnarly clip of 60+ mph, I might add John said he was conserving fuel, over that the super chargers kick in :o His Vexus is unreal... just like that we're setting gear. Immediately on a leaping silver, gonna be a good day. And it was fish after fish, lost more than I'd like to admit and our "derby winner" ended up being an 8# laker ;) ended up mid double digits all 3-4lbers, no toads, dang it. Oh and it's 96° and high noon and we haven't slept ;) Strategic team talk and we're off to get a few hours sleep before the switch to our night bite... Did I mention tent, yeah trying to sleep in a tent in a hundred frickin degrees is definitely worth trying  The smarter of the 2 of us ended up in the truck with the ac on cooling his core temp down for 2 hrs while the crispy well done outer layer of my brain may never recover fully  Well its 3 pm DAY 1 and 2 hours of suffering on land is enough, quick cold shower and back to the watering hole for some more bright ideas and a meal before phase 2 attack

Friday evening 6pm back to our salubrious walleye spots and there is lots of funny red and green lights bobbing around! Crowds out tonight, we check on some secondary points and reefs and offshore haunts really wishing at this point smallmouth where a part of this derby  putting on a trolling/casting clinic on how long baits can be wet and species specific bare in 1 outing. Next thing you know it's 1:30 am and we're working off of 3 hrs worth of sauna quality zzz's in the last 40 hrs. It's time to head back to the camp for a cold 1 and some rest, literally 1 and we're out like a  and before ya know it my anyoing alarm I meant to turn off was going off, so much for a few solid hours of uninterrupted sleep. A couple hours later and a quick shower to snap to and we're off to launch.

7am Saturday and we launch from Arnold's bay to stick with the southern bite. Drop gear just south of Westport to troll down to our honey pot and John immediately has a nice cookie cutter 3#er leaping air borne right behind the boat. Almost no better way to gain some gusto than flying silver when your draggggin a$$. Quite a period of time with minimal action and we're back in the bait and fish we left the day before. Ground out the day until 4pm or so with similar results as day 1. 8 salmon 1 small steelie couple lakers nothing breaking 4#s. It's time to go have a pow wow and solve the world's or our problems I should say after a rejuvenating cold shower, cold beverage and hot meal. After a few choice words to eachother at the Tavern 8-) we're determined to figure out this green gold bite tonight. It's 6 pm and we're on the water hitting our oh so hot spots! Tonight tho there's only a couple boats and there gone by dark, did we miss the memo?! We're sticking to our guns and gonna ride it out. After a few hours of non target species and persistent failure its 9:30 and we come on a wind blown rocky shore and decide to lock in and cast knowing bait has to have been blown up on in the last 2 days and BANG first cast John's on, bigger fish... it's a walleye!!! In the net 5#er talk about rejuvenation. Us 2 Zombies come full swing back to our youth, we have multiple species hammering bait 50' away. Cast again drum again giant white again BANG... Big John BIg is all I could muster. After a knee knocking battle and multiple red light glimpses of big color we have a 27" 6.5# walleye in our net, serious adrenaline dump, for the next couple hours we work around the area till the bite dies off with nothing better than what we have coming it's time to troll back, 2 am again :!: boats on the trailer reset for the morning.

That prior afternoon we had a 6 mile run into 3-4' waves that we made in serious time at 33mph. John knows his boat and it's impressive to eat thru waves like that, what a ride. Time to test it again, this time Sunday morning after 4 hours of rest, camp has been dropped and loaded as we have a long haul home in the opposite direction. We decide to launch under the bridge as it will be a shorter ride home and can troll out with the waves at the end but we need to make a heck of a run north in 3-4'ers. Unbelievable, John was able to maintain 40 mph no joke on top of these waves to the fishing grounds. Talk about some serious smiles. We pulled up to the area as a near boats net was dropping and shortly after they were motoring south to Port Henry :?: Congrats on that steelie guys. We picked off a few more salmon on our way south to Port Henry for our trip to weigh in. Mid lake was rolling 5s and 6'ers with an occasional rogue beast. 2-3'ers in the harbor was exiting to say the least but worth ever second to put what was our goal, a walleye on the board. And she stuck for 5th. I should say day 1 salmon bite was mainly off the riggers a couple off lead Kathy Jean, Bomb pop, Bannana moon custom tape also produced. Day 2 very similar on riggers, couple more on cheaters than day 1, 1 on lead, 1 on slide. Three stooges seamed to be hotter. Day 3 -2 off riggers couple cheaters. Great memories where definitely made goals achieved and we conquered a few of our problems :D Sleep not so much

Well done, and great report, lots of fun to read !
I do not exaggerate when I talk about fishing - I underestimate, like I say "just one more cast honey, then I'll come home" !
Keep Calm and... Fish On !
